Wisconsin Hoofers, UW's outdoor recreation club, has a long and rich history. The first home of Hoofers was in the basement of the old UW President's house at the corner of Langdon and Park Street (where Memorial Union is now located). They didn't move into their current location in the lower level of the Union Theater until 1939. A variety of Hoofer insterests and clubs were formed over the years including Skiing, Archery, Sailing, Hunt, Riding, Mountaineering, Canoeing, Gliding, SCUBA, and Ballooning. While many of these clubs have dissolved or evolved, one thing has remained the same: a love of the outdoors.
Today, Hoofers consists of six clubs: Mountaineering, Outing, Riding, Ski and Snowboard, Sailing, and SCUBA. They sponsor five collegiate competitive teams: Alpine, Nordic, Freestyle, Riding, and Sailing. In addition, there is an active Hoofer Youth Program involving over 500 youth each year.
