Solutions and challenges to bacterial loading

Some of the sources of bacterial pollution to the Yahara Lakes beaches are stormwater outfalls, streams, geese and restroom facilities.

There are multiple ways in which bacterial contamination can be prevented:

  • Identification of storm sewer outfalls and their influence on beaches
  • Diversion of water from the nearest storm sewer outfall to a detention pond
  • Installation of storm sewer infrastructure to prevent runoff from the landscape
  • Geese management

The challenges to managing beach contamination are:

  • Multiple storm sewer outfalls may affect one beach
  • Wind patterns can cause plant accumulation near the beach
  • Surround land uses may prevent use of best management practices
